KELLOGG ART & DESIGN

Art Shack 2.0

JunePlaya 2021

The piece:

Art Shack/Art Garden was an extended concept-development of a previously built shack made from pallets and 2x4s in 2019. The Art Garden was made up of 2x6, 4x6, 4x4, 4x6, 6x8s, and 6x12s. The larger beams were donated to the project from a private source in lieu of their split and warped state, useless to the construction project for which they were initially for. These larger pieces were cut to manageable sizes and assigned positions as posts for the central Art Shack and the surrounding Art Garden Benches. I designed this piece with the intent to push for free standing forms that were sound and secure enough for people to walk amongst them and sit on them. I used heavy grade hardware to secure these beams into place.

The Material:

reclaimed wood

The team:

Approximately 20 people were involved with this project in one way or another. All of the material and labor was executed with love and compassion for building art. Had I not had the volunteers and extra hands that I did, this piece would have taken three times longer to pre-cut, transport, and erect.

The experience:

We raised this piece from components to form and space. Once the skeleton and my design therein was placed and staged, I left room for folks who were interested in creating or placing pieces to jump in and swing a hammer (only if they had closed-toed shoes of course).

Many people developed a fellowship together working on this piece. My madness to throw in on as much detail and creativity as possible met with people who had a curiosity for art, collaboration, and development. Together those involved, whether as viewers or helpers, shared a memory or attachment or snippet or participation in something far larger than what any one man could do.
